i am so honored that you have found me i am of course a wedding fashion expert bridal stylist
i wear so many different hats at lovella bridal located in los angeles california i am completely
and utterly obsessed with what i do for a living it's a true honor and a privilege to dress
women in the most important article of clothing they will ever wear for daily content please
be sure to follow @lovellabridal @lovellaplus @weddingfashionexpert on instagram so many
requests for me to do a tutorial on how to bustle a wedding dress the reason why this video
is not a tutorial on how to do a bustle is because every single bustle that you see done on a dress
is designed specifically for that gown i'm first going to explain what a bustle is and then
circle back to what i just said a bustle is done in the alteration process where
the train so wedding dresses have long trains which is the word that we use for the
fabric trailing behind you for your wedding dress so the train of course it's not functional for
you to be dancing the night away with this trail of fabric following behind you and people stepping
on it ripping it all that jazz it's not ideal so a bustle is done specifically to gather that fabric
all the way up and create a more balanced length at your hem so you can move freely wedding dresses
don't come with bustles pre-done it wouldn't make sense so the reason why your bustle is custom done
and i can't do a tutorial for you is because each bustle on each gown is different number one for
design and aesthetic purposes but number two the bustle length so the length in which the fabric
is getting gathered up to be shortened for you to walk around freely on wedding day is determined
by the length of your gown so this is why dresses can't come with bustles done in the past i've
had designers at lavella bridal create dresses with bustles done it was such a waste of their
efforts in production because the bustles were never appropriate once the gown was hemmed to the
bride's height and of course her heel height so your height has a lot to do with it but also the
heel height that you choose to wear on wedding day so once your hem the front of your dress is hemmed
properly to the proper length so we typically just hem the front and a little bit of the side and
then it'll gradually transition to your train from there the train is then gathered and that
is where the bustle gets created and of course a bustle on a ball gown versus a fitted dress versus
taffeta fabric versus tulle fabric they all gather differently and functionally seamstresses do
bustles differently so some bustles could be a loop with a string that's met to it and you tie
it or it could be a loop that loops to a button and these are all designed by seamstresses or it's
a hook and an eye every bustle is different that being said because every bustle is different for
each gown and for each individual i can't possibly give you a tutorial of this is how you bustle
a dress however the seamstress that is altering your dress is able to give you that tutorial which
i recommend videotaping that so that you are able to show friends bridesmaids family members wedding
planners anyone can know so that you could take one video and disperse it to all the important
people who are going to be helping you with bustling your wedding dress this also takes
the pressure off of having someone with you physically at that appointment that you can take
a video and show it to them after the fact a lot of people always say oh no i don't want to take
video of it i've got this we forced them to take a video anyway because in our experience at Lovella
Bridal we have found that so many people say oh i've got it and then after a wedding day we'd hear
we couldn't figure out the bustle on wedding day it was such a pain so we never bustled the dress
now it's time to discuss the look of bustles we just covered functionality what it is what it
means and why you do it it's all functional let's go in to the design of the bustle and
it being aesthetically appealing to you i have so many brides tell me that they hate the bustle
that they are not a fan of how it looks they feel like the fabric's really heavy it's uncomfortable
they don't enjoy it on and on and on and on this is personal preference i'm okay with
the bustles because at the point of when you bustle your dress most of your photos are taken
from the waist up or their full frontal photos like no one's taking back photos of you at this
point it's for pure function the only time the bustle was really showing during the reception is
when you're dancing and moving around and again it's for function so it's not going to look
unbelievable because bustles are constantly moving your dress is moving it's an article of
clothing it's not going to lay perfectly and beautifully more so this is for comfort and
function now if you have a super long train sometimes if they're really really really long
it's not even worth doing a bustle you need a second dress and i'm talking like dramatically
long okay like super super super duper long you at that point you want to have a second dress
to change into and that's what i suggest to brides who don't like the way their bustle looks if you
really don't like it then get a second dress that you change into and don't even bother with a
bustle there are some brides that feel really really strongly and despise the way they look and
then i have other brides that are so obsessed with their bustles of course bustles look different
on every single dress different fabrics drape differently and they sit differently they lay
differently they weigh a certain amount right so if you have a super long train that fabric has
to get gathered one way or another and sometimes there's no beautifully aesthetic perfect way to
do it sometimes it's just purely function and not about the looks and other times you can find
dresses or have dresses that look beautifully aesthetically appealing and also functionally
it moves functionally for the reception as well i also recommend for you to have safety pins just
in case i often hear feedback about bride saying that someone stepped on their bustle they stepped
on the train on the dance floor and it ripped the bustle so they needed to either sew it or safety
pin it so always have that prevention plan in place and ready to go so that you can enjoy and
dance the night away lastly it is not a horrible idea to just have a simple dress on the side just
waiting for you just in case a malfunction happens during your reception you have a backup dress
to change into not ideal i know when you want to dance the night away in the same exact dress but
it is a great thing to have just in case so highly recommend a backup dress even if it's just super
inexpensive simple white something to enjoy and dance the night away just in case you get super
uncomfortable and you want to take your dress off i hope that this added clarity into what a bustle
is functionality and just being realistic with your expectations on how it's going to look as
a finished product for more videos and tips like this please be sure to tune in every wednesday 8
