like to make these dances kind of stand out and be very special so I don't like to do it after the first dance and I really don't always like to do it to start the dance portion of the evening having those them dancing I like to kind of put it in a spot where it's spotlighted meaning if you have like a three-course meal let's do it between the second and third course where it's highlighted and everyone gets to share in that very special moment with you and then we go into something else when you go from those dances and then straight to dancing it kind of takes away I think from that special moment that just happened you're right now choosing this song the mother and son dances is so such a difficult thing to do and grooms seem to have a really tough time picking a song to dance with their moms that's why many years ago I created a special curated list of mother-son dance songs for my clients and every year I update the list and this year is absolutely no exception Our Guest today is a songwriter her name is Tony Becker and she's created what I consider one of the best mother-son wedding dance songs but I'll let her her explain hi Tony tell us how you came up with the song dance with me baby well thank you for having me I am a mom of boys I have two beautiful sons Ben and Jack when they left home for college it got me thinking about next chapters in our family's life and I started thinking about their weddings and just wondering what that would look like I started thinking about the mother-son dance and what song we might choose to dance that special dance which then landed me on the internet where I became lost in a sea of choices and while there are so many beautiful choices out there none of the songs really spoke my true heart and I knew that I needed the perfect song for those two weddings and those dances someday so I just modeled up the energy and the emotions that I was feeling just thinking about their weddings and I wrote my own I wrote my own song you know that's incredible and I think sometimes the groom doesn't realize how important this is to the mom I've had many go oh my my mom doesn't really care and I say look don't make that decision for her you definitely need to talk to her because it may be a lot more important than you really think it is and many times they find out later wow that was absolutely correct it was a big deal to them so I need to take this more seriously yes in my opinion I think that moms are struggling well I think a lot of people are struggling on that special day with a tsunami of emotion and for moms you know we we brought them to this day we have so much we want to say yet it's difficult to be that vulnerable because we want to mark that momentous occasion the transition the leaving and cleaving the Beautiful the Bittersweet and the letting go and I think that dance with me baby helps to make that moment happen well one of the the things I really enjoyed about the song is uh the lyrics and I'm just going to read one of the lyrics that I fell in love with it says time flies now here you stand looking at you takes my breath away from the moment your life began to this strong and handsome man on your wedding day [Music] let me take a long long look at you let me breathe in all I can let the memories pour like sand it's just me and you [Music] time flies now here you stay away [Music] from the moment your life begins to this strong and handsome man on your wedding day those lyrics kind of encapsulate everything that a groom should really be looking for when he's dancing with his mom like you said it's harder for guys I think to wonder if that's the right move for them to have that dance because they want to be strong and they don't want to be a weeping mess on the Dance Floor you know I think that that might be an issue but I think that if they push past that and that they allow that special vignette with their mother they won't regret it because you know they need that moment in the scheme of the chaotic sometimes chaotic wedding I think they need that moment of embrace and just remembering remembering all that was I have a lyric in the song that says to dance for all that was and all that's yet to be oh that's beautiful why don't we take a little listen to that and get inspired let me hold you hold his arms so let's dance for all at once and all that's yet to be Dance With Me Baby dance with me something I would like to bring up in my own personal experience in my own wedding was my mom was not that emotional person she wasn't a dancer so she was really had no problem with not having a mother-son dance at all but I did surprise her on the day of the wedding and she was introduced out to the dance floor and then she realized we're about to have that mother-son dance moment and yeah after that dance was over it was emotional for both of us and um and as yes she realized how important that really was to her after it was all said and done and how important was for both of us actually that's a touching story Sal really brings the emotion to what that dance is really all about truly beautiful that's a beautiful story thank you Tony's tell us a little bit more about your your background I'm sure you didn't suddenly wake up one morning and become a songwriter I have always played music or been in a band I'm a solo performer I've written songs all my life these days like the band thing is over but I still continue to write you know now I just enjoy creating songs that are meaningful to specific situations I've written a song about reunions and I'd written a song for my baby sister when she got married two days before her wedding and I surprised her with it singing it at her wedding so I just love that part of it being a musician and I love how they dance with me baby turned out because it just does give you that three and a half minutes where a mom and her son can dance and reflect on all that led them to that moment in a spirit of warmth and love and respect and just gratitude it's an important few minutes I think well Tony how do you get a copy of this song I'm sure our listeners are now eager to get remembered forever definitely and some of the alternatives are beautiful things like asking for a stand-in like you know your favorite aunt that you're so close to if your grandmother is still alive that is such a beautiful dance too so you don't feel like you're the only people in the world there on the dance so you can have your guests join in on a special dance at the same time as the father-daughter dance song you could have the mother-son dance there's another nice one uh when it when siblings are good together is the uh brother sister dance that's always pretty awesome I've had some really close brothers and sisters who've come on dance floor and I think that's made that people weep more than anything else do a slideshow in remembrance of your mom with a very special song in the background that could be really nice nice touch or all together just skip it yeah when I got married I didn't want to do you know a song with my mom and neither did my mom so we did that alternative that you mentioned when my wife was dancing with her dad we just joined in and that solved it for both of us so there are many Alternatives so make sure you think of those Alternatives before you just jump in and either dance with a song that you don't like or you just do the event that you don't want to no matter what type of song you choose this will be a very special and memorable moment between the both of you it's a great way to honor the lady who raised you and now stepping aside to make you someone else's responsibility so we're going to talk about some songs that Sam and I have chosen as our top 10 songs for Mother Sun dances would you like to go first Sam I certainly will these are unique mother-son dances that we've played at atmosphere Productions uh weddings just gonna go through the list they're in no particular order and obviously we don't have the copyright to play these songs so we're just going to mention them and you can Google and take a listen first one that I have on my list is Celine Dion's because you love me in the 90s that was a classic song that almost every groom used to dance with his mom so it's a little overplayed but it still has the classic lyrics for it Bill Withers Lean On Me really no need to say anything more about that Bill Withers classic soul artist from the 70s Van Morrison days like this this is another lay late 90s song I think that became very popular for the mother-son wedding dance something a little newer is Tim McGraw's humble and kind if you like country music and country love songs the perfect song go no further I want to go back to some 70s r b you can check out you are the sunshine of my life from Stevie Wonder and also back in the 70s another classic Stand By Me the original Benny king version is the one of my choice also stick in with the 60s is a classic from The Beach Boys God only knows it's a little different song with the tempo but it is a song that really the lyrics really speak for them themselves The Jackson 5 on the Motown label I'll be there it's a great song lyrics again maybe a little lovey-dovey but they certainly speak to a mother and son Michael W Smith I'll be there for you if my man Me shows me right I think that was more of an late 80s early 90s Christian song but the lyrics again fantastic and I decided to pick one that's out of left field Amos Lee and sweet pea if you've never heard this song take a listen you may be persuaded to use this as the mother-son wedding dance that is a great song definitely so that's your top ten now I guess it's my turn for my top ten I have this thing I could be a little childish I'm gonna admit that and I think what sometimes happens is when you pull a song from your childhood to play for the mother Sundance that makes it really special so one is uh from the Tarzan movie we have Phil Collins You'll Be in my Heart which I won't say is overused but is used often but again it has that childlike thing remembering your son when he was younger the next one for me is uh what a what a wonderful world by Louis Armstrong this is one I actually dance with my mom too it's such a great song and then back to Childish we have Toy Story here You've Got a Friend in Me by Randy Newman that just seems to be really fun to do with mom and son now here's one that is I'm gonna be honest overused and that's Rascal Flatts My Wish a great song but just keep in mind many people use it that's something you really love go for it but if you think you don't want to use an overused song maybe you want to stay away from it one that was just introduced to me and I really loved the song was The Band Perry Mother Like Mine that's another awesome song check that out then let's see here we have a classic here A Song For Mama this is a song that almost makes me cry every time I have to play it so another awesome song that was definitely you know meant for mom and another one is uh Do I Make You Proud by Taylor Hicks one of the American Idol singers another great song Take take a listen to that now going back to Childhood The Muppets okay well my childhood's a lot farther back than most people when they're getting married at this point in time but the Rainbow Connection that is an awesome awesome thing and then we have Molly pasuti who is a local artist who did uh the man you've become that's another uh great song he has great meaning to it uh this was a mom who wanted to put a song together that worked with her her and her son then we have uh something more broader we have the perfect Band by the Backstreet Boys they did an awesome job with that now here's one so is the southern rock we have Lynyrd Skynyrd Simple Man now Simple Man what ends up being a little problematic for this one is that uh it says my only son in there and if it's not your only son that could be a problem but if you have the right DJ they could actually edit that part out and you don't even have to worry about it and then an artist that I absolutely love Carol King and you got a friend every time I hear this song I feel it's the mom singing to her son which I think is just absolutely awesome so there's my top ten
